Winter Getaways

December 19,2018 | Lifestyle

Turkey’s been eaten, presents unwrapped and your white wonderland is quickly morphing into winter wanderlust.  When visions of warm beaches or cool adventures begin dancing in your head, it’s time to make tracks. Trade frostbite for a sun-kissed snowbird vacation, cross the pond for cultural icons or spread your wings to legendary exotic locales. Whether your winter getaway boasts mountain vistas, cozy fires and cross-country skiing or a sandy utopia of balmy temps and endless coastline, there are a myriad of destinations to choose from. Here are just a few ideas:

With romantic fjords, an iconic waterfront, roaring firesides and hilly waterways, Bergen, Norway is a chill spot for a true winter odyssey.  Après ski or zealous skiers alike find their way to the crisp air of St. Moritz, Switzerland, known for its mineral springs and lush spas, snowboarding and fine dining. Want to stay in the USA?  Head to North Lake Tahoe, NV where its 180 degree alpine panorama competes with cold weather activities like skiing snowboarding, snowmobiling and yes, dog sledding.

It’s hard to imagine a more idyllic spot than Italy’s Amalfi Coast, where winding roads frame a stunning shoreline. Discover Positano’s brightly colored architecture, handmade ceramics and graceful domed churches. Savor fresh caught seafood while sipping limoncello in cliff-nestled bistros. Or travel north to Tuscany whose rolling hills of every shade of green, medieval towns and miles of award-winning vineyards just wait to be discovered. Try your hand at cooking your own authentic Italian dishes with personal cooking lessons. Abbondanza! Closer to home get your inner sommelier on in California’s Napa Valley and Sonoma regions where signature wines pair well with the area’s many Michelin-starred restaurants.

For a savvy mix of palm-tree laden beaches and adventure, St. Lucia is a spellbinding winter’s choice where windsurfing, and waterskiing compete with the sheer beauty of the place. Visit the serene Anse Chastanet or the 44-acre Pigeon Island National Park. If snorkeling is your game, Koh Tao, Thailand is a unique winter destination. Dive by day and get your fill of pampered luxury by night in gorgeous five star resorts. Exotic Singapore, Malaysia’s glitzy island city-state features year-round balmy temperatures, exciting festivals, high-end resorts and a top trendy foodie scene. Experience the 419-foot long aerial walkway to view 160 foot tall ‘super trees’ in the vertical gardens.

If its history and centuries old architecture you crave, include Prague, Czech Republic in your winter vacation list. Stroll along the Vltava River. Discover historic castles, cafes and churches and make Instagram magic on the Charles Bridge. Lack of crowds in a city known for hearty cuisine and incredible beauty is reason enough to brave the cold.  Our own Newport, RI also hosts winter chilly weather but its Gilded Age mansions, majestic snowy Cliff Walk, the Brick Market Place and Newport Winter Festival make it a top destination any time of year.

For the true snowbird, nothing beats sun on your face and sand in your toes.  Sugary beaches and aquamarine waters of Sanibel Island, FL, or the cascading waterfalls, dramatic cliffs and aloha vibe of Kauai, Hawaii. For sunshine that never quits, San Diego, CA delivers. Just add surfing, kayaking and picture perfect sunsets for winter getaway perfection. Or take in the radiant, wide open spaces of artsy Sedona, AZ as you indulge in a lush desert resort. Way to spend your winter vacation!
